The Adventures of Brian (cont)

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

"Where are we?" Lucas asked. No one seemed to know.

"It was so weird,” Liam said. “I woke up and found myself here. Somehow I can hear tiny sounds of insects, birds, and winds but it’s like they’re an inner voice telling me what to do. I tried to whisper or think words to talk back, but it had no effect. It’s like I can hear them... but I can’t talk to them. This is almost like being on another planet! Something told me to enjoy the temporary stay here and we’ll be home soon. But I don’t want to go home yet! I, ..."

"Who told you?" interrupted Aiden. He explained how he experienced a similar sensation, a soft voice earlier telling him to experience this amazing adventure with his friends.

Not waiting for Liam, Lucas quickly answered, "A very strange thing happened to me, too. Since I woke up, it’s like I have had visions inside my head of meadows, mountains and bridle paths, forests, lakes and a wonderful village. I almost felt like I had been there before. And now I’m here with you all. A voice like the one you both have described told me to find you and go there.”

They all looked perplexed but felt relief and joy at their shared experience. The sensation of excitement, incredible and magical senses, inner voice, power and youthful surge of energy spread through the air. They were not afraid, and they accepted and embraced the strange phenomenon as if it was natural and normal. Things were quite pleasant here, like a summer stroll in a safe meadow.

"Why don't we explore this place?" said Brian. "I want to find what I saw in my mind." Brian looked up and silently commanded the sword to come down. Almost immediately, the sword reappeared in his hand glowing with soft, diffused colorful light.

"That is so RAD! How did you do that, Brian?" Liam asked.

"I found it next to me,” Brian answered. “I can command it to do anything."

"Can I see it?" Liam asked.

Brian opened his fingers and tried to let Liam grab the sword. It instantly became an angry bright red and emitted a high-pitched shriek when Liam hands touched it. A sharp jolt forced him to release the sword. The shrieking sounds stopped and the sword softened to the diffused, light hue colors when returned to Brian’s hand.

"Wow!" exclaimed the others, "Brian, the sword knows you!"

"Look, guys" Brian silently commanded the sword to fly over the top of one of the boulders and cut a branch of the third aspen from the left. The sword flew out from his open hand and made a silvery streak, straight to the third aspen. With a swift, silent swoop, the sword flew back to Brian's hand before the top of the aspen completely fell to the ground. The other three boys stood stunned and unbelieving at what they had witnessed.

Brian realized that the sword was his and the other boys' protector. He had seen the sword would only listen to him, but that it would do things that he asked. He felt that he had grown ten feet tall from bravery and was now full of confidence.
